SHPOA Minutes of Meeting at Picnic

11:30 a.m. March 12, 2022

121 Bayview Drive

At 11:45 Keith welcomed all in attendance. Jacquie’s count was 42. The Sea Base delivered 6

tables, each able to seat 6 guests.

After the Board members were introduced, Keith and Diane told a story about a stray/adopted

cat which they took to the Humane Society shelter in Key Largo.

Howard Brody opened conversation regarding canal cleanup and overgrown mangroves. Little

has been done since the destruction from Hurricane Irma. Joe St. Aubin also had comments. A

vote was taken to follow up with the Village of Islamorada which was seconded and passed in

favor. Walt stated that he would contact the Village.

Ed Speck announced that he would like to donate his time and expense to take care of the

landscaping and maintenance of the entrance (sign) to Safety Harbor. Nelson will still trim the

mangroves and keep the “windows” open. A vote was taken, seconded, and passed in favor.

Edie Dlubak raised the issue of dog waste, saying that she thought it was racoons in the area.

In response to the comment, Joy distributed a “Good Neighbor” flyer along with a letter from

her husband and past president, Dave.

Dick Spohn introduced Teri as our new president. Teri spoke briefly about her and her

husband, Paul, and their arrival to Safety Harbor. Teri said we have 100 “roofs”. 90 active, 44

paid members.

Walt went over the expenses, paid and unpaid. Current balance in the bank with membership

money: $3,900.

Teri brought up the suggestion of an “information board” like the one they have for the

Venetian Shores Homeowners Association (sent pics to the BOD). Teri will look into this further

as to permitted location, etc.

Keith asked for any newcomers to introduce themselves: On Palm Drive – Dennis & Patti; on

Willow Lane -- Wayne & Kelly; Roly & MariaLina (with daughter) on Bayview Drive. Dennis

Powell was accredited for replacing the solar lights on the palm trees along the Palm Drive

entrance.

Keith mentioned that we often have a local representative; i.e., from the Sheriff’s office, FWC,

or Islamorada Fire Department speak at our yearly picnic, but due to the late formation of this

year’s event, we were not able to organize that this year.

The subject of crime was raised and Walt mentioned that there was a motorcycle gang

roaming ruthlessly on Big Pine Key. The “Florida Outlaws and Pagans”. (?} So far, crime is low

in our neighborhood. A deputy does cruise by in our neighborhood when time allows.

Joe St. Aubin suggested that members go onto the Village of Islamorada’s website and attend

their council meetings virtually. Important subjects to watch are “Culverts”, “The Fills”, and

the Sea Base, our helpful neighbor and property owner.

The meeting ended informally around 12:15 p.m.

Respectfully submitted,

Jacquie Dozier
